A new look digital display offering

What is this?

A great deal of work has been done recently by the digital product team to clear up the legacy digital classification codes to make the system easier to use and compliant. If you book digital ads this will affect you so please read this page to discover what is happening and why.

Why is this happening?

There are two main reasons for this change

1

Making OBA2 easier for you to use by removing the unwanted and unused classification codes

2

This work ensures that we comply with IAB best practices and the Coalition for Better Ads initiative

What is changing?

REMOVAL OF DEFUNCT CLASSIFICATION CODES

There are over 50 classification codes that are no longer used, with many of these having not received a single booking in the past 12 months. We have removed these to make it easier to select relevant and usable classifications.

STRUCTURE TO AGGREGATE THE CLASSIFICATION CODES

There is also no logical order or structure to the 100+ classification codes that simply appear in a long, alphabetical list. The new structure will group classification codes by type i.e. all digital display codes will appear together, all DPM codes will appear together etc.

REMOVAL OF DESKTOP ONLY PLACEMENTS

Over 90% of our on network display bookings are desktop only placements and yet desktop accounts for less than 30% of our total traffic. By replacing the desktop only classifications with responsive placements that flight across all devices we will free up significant inventory, especially on some of our sites with lower traffic volumes. It will also mean your customer’s campaigns reach all our readers on whatever device they are using.

ADDITION OF IMPACT

Impact combines three ad units across desktop, tablet and mobile. It is a premium format that has highly-impactful COMPAN ads (Billboard and Wallpaper) and a new Sticky Mobile Banner. Impact will provide customers excellent brand exposure on our sites, with their ads always being in-view on desktop and mobile with a high position MPU on tablet.

REMOVAL OF SOME DISPLAY UNITS

D-Panel, Prestitial and Interstitial classifications will be removed and no longer bookable. This is being done to comply with IAB best practice standards as well as the Coalition for Better Ads “Better Ads Standard”. They will no longer be bookable from Thursday 19th October and any future bookings in 2017 will be flighted as booked but at the end of the year we will stop using these placements altogether. These changes are part of our continual effort to create an ad environment that advertisers love and our readers accept.

WHAT WILL YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

There will be no change to the booking process that you currently follow, other than the removal and restructure of the classifications as listed above. If you have regular customers booking one of the classifications that we are removing I would suggest discussing and explain this with your customer and booking another placement. The Prestitial and Interstitial classifications have had very few bookings in the past 12 months so this should not be a common problem. The D-Panel has been used more regularly, MPUs are a great alternative to these bookings. Your advertisers will have more space for their brand and campaign message with an MPU than a D-Panel.
